After having purchased many external HD drive of varying sizes in the past, the 1TB Western Digital 'My Book' has proven to be the most reliable, quiet and sleek units I have purchased so far.

The drive comes formatted as FAT32, so before you do anything else, I would recommend reformatting the drive as NTFS if you are intending to store large images, video or your music collection on it. With the drive being 1TB, you'll need to leave quite a while for the reformat to take place (mine was still going through the process 2 hours after kicking it off). If you are intending to connect it directly to your xbox360, you'll need to leave it formatted as FAT32 as the xbox can't read NTFS file systems (apparently).

The casing looks pretty cool and doesn't give off anywhere near as much heat as my other external HD's I've purchased in the past. There is no fan fitted so the drive is quiet while it's sitting dormant.

The drive powers up and down with your PC,so you can leave it connected all the time. There is no power switch on the unit itself.

If you are not accessing or writing files to the drive, the unit will go dormant to save on power. It normally takes a few seconds for the drive to spin up. This can be quite frustrating at times, but certainly no different from experiences with other external HD's.

The great thing about it now is that my Mac keeps backing up data every day and there is no hassle. When I power down my computer, the drive also turns off. I bought this HDD for use in the Media Centre im currently trying to create.
Decided that i should back my DVDs up, allowing me to stick them in the loft and free up space for some others.

As a reviewer above said, id rather have this glossy black QUIET bit of kit on show than a clunky brick looking thing.

It currently looks like ill be needing even more storage for a i wouldnt hesitate to buy another of these.

One of the things i like most about it is that if left plugged into a PC, it will turn itself off when the PC is powered down. It needs a signal from both the mains and the USB.

One thing to note however is that it doesnt do this when used with the Western Digital Media Centre. Not sure why this is. Maybe something im not doing. Seems like quite an oversight from their point of view if its not my fault.

I was very happy with my first WD "My Book" and have just bought a second.

It's neat, simple and incredibly quiet. It discretely turns itself on and off when the PC it's attached to is switched on or off, so there's no need for a power switch, which is one of my favourite things about it.

The slowly flashing blue light on the front is just a little bit sci-fi but not too distracting. It's quite classy.

The only connectivity is USB, so it's not the quickest drive in the world, but it's easily good enough for archiving and backup purposes, hence the 'My Book' brand- it's the kind of thing that's supposed to sit quietly on a shelf, it's not a rugged outdoors crazy-usage kind of drive.

In my job I work with some very valuable data files and we've learnt from experience that NO hard drive is ever GUARANTEED not to fail and that you should ALWAYS have two copies of EVERYTHING- I can't stress that enough. Obviously this drive's no different, but that's not a criticism of this drive unless somebody can show me any drive that works perfectly forever.

The case does feel a little bit flimsy compared to some of the metal-cased external HDs I've had.
