Straight out of the box the WD drive has a good solid feel and the rubber ends mean no scratches on it or the surface on which it stands. The included 0.5m USB cable is long enough for my set up and interface with the Macbook was a breeze.
No reformatting was required as the drive was recognised straight away and I dumped approx 160GB of data onto it minutes (can't remember how long to be more specific - sorry). The drive is virtually silent and the power supply doesn't have that annoying hum or buzz which is sometimes loud enough to keep you awake at night (compare this with some Logitech power supplies). The unit also has no bright lights while operating which also suits me.
It comes with some preloaded backup software of some sort but I'm not into that sort of thing so simply deleted it, freeing up a modicum of space.

I've been having no trouble with this great little well built and low temperature little unit, but i just plugged it it and the adapter popped loudly and gave me a small (guessing 12v) electric shock. So now the drive doesn't power up.
Pulled the rubber end caps off to get a better look at everything and it pulled the back plate off as well splitting the warranty sticker in half.
"Well ive come this far" i thought, so pulled the drive out and no have to use it with a powered usb to sata converter.

I bought this as a backup drive for my Mac G4 (running 10.4.11). The spec on the Western Digital site claims that it supports Tiger and is backwards-compatible with USB 1.1. The box even claimed that it supports Panther..? Talk about facts not being straight! I couldn't get my MDD Mac to even recognise it. It would show up tantalisingly in Disk Utility but when I tried to format it - "Input/output error".
So, I scoured the web for info and other owners were having the same problem and had got the drive to work by messing with how it was partitioned (i.e. swapping to an Apple Partition Map). Not for me. I tried taking it out of my USB hub and plugging it directly into my USB port. Again, no joy. I tried these steps on two different drives.
In the end I returned both drives (all credit to Amazon for their enormously efficient returns policy) and opted for the more expensive MyBook Studio 1TB (again by WD). Works perfectly. This is my 3rd Western digital external hard drive and is by far the best. Previously I had the 'My Book' Range, this 'elements' HD is excellent. Easy to set up and use, transfer rate is acceptable for USB 2.0 and is much smaller and quiester than previous HDs.
I use it mainly for holding TV and film files, the 1TB of space gives you a new sense of freedom about how much data you can have. Previously I used two external HDs (250GB each) and switching to one large HD is much better. My computer load time is also slightly improved!
Once formatted my HD says it has 931.28GB of space. The time for a selected file to play is almost instant. The only negative I can find is that the included USB cable is a bit too short. I'm far from being a computer whizz but already have two external HDs, one of which is a WD Book which has worked fine for a couple of years. I read all the reviews of external HDs including those in Computing Which?. It was a toss up between the WD Elements 1 TB and the Omega 1 TB. But I trust Amazon's returns policy and am pleased with the purchase. It comes with no instructions at all (see below) but was plug and play with no problem. It seems to work fine after about 3 weeks use. Just one word - if like me you need it for storing video camera material, it seems to be FAT32 partitioned which limts the file size. Having copied a number of videos on to it, I now have to remove them and re-partition the HD to take larger file sizes. It's very quiet and works as well as any other drive you'll find for the price.
The only time that you have issues with it is if you don't format it correctly, and then that's just a problem with the filesystem (to people complaining about 4GB files not copying over fully)
There is an indicator light near the back, even though people say there isn't, and it's very small, so not at all distracting.

This unit works well at a good price with only a couple of niggling points;
Not sure if this is a problem with my PC or due to the unit, but if I plug it into the PC's USB socket with the unit already running, sometimes it cause the PC to instantly shut down. Plug it in BEFORE powering it up and it's fine.
Call me pedantic if you will, but the PSU has a built in plug and the output lead comes off the top. Every UK mains plug I've seen is bottom entry so I have my row of undershelf sockets set high, therefore there's no room for the output lead from this PSU.
Others have pointed out PSU failures, but so far so good on this one. It uses 12VDC which is commonly available.

Despite other reviewers comments the installation of this hard drive was not plain sailing. It would not accept files above 4GB which is a bit odd as it is a 1TB drive and therefore aimed at users who need to store / archive files of a sinificant size. Been using for round two weeks.
I got this to back up my data, mostly HD movies. And this is pretty good for storage. But when you copy, the temps are extremely hot. No cooling effect by the case whatsoever. Although I didn't expect cooling for this case and price, the temps are a bit worrying. If you plan to keep it switched on for long periods of time better point a fan at it. Cos heat will deteriorate its lifespan and increase risk of failure.
Transfer speeds are acceptable. For storage, USB 2.0 is more than enough. Can even play the HD movies I stored via USB so I dont miss esata.
Comments on reliability will have to wait till I use for round a year. :)
Only thing I miss is a power button thus one star less.
Overall good product for the price.

I have never written a review on Amazon before, but I thought this hard drive merited one. I bought mine for £69 and is great value for 1Tb of space. It also looks quite smart and doesn't take up loads of space, like some Tb drives.
The down sides are that unfortunatelly it has to be plugged into the mains to work and it is a bit slow, but it is cheap, so what do you expect?
