Good price for a 1TB drive, says it works with Mac, so fine for an archive drive as it's only USB not Firewire too. Took way too long to set up, had to work my way through 3 different Macs in the studio to get it working (and I'm pretty clued up on this kind of thing!) and even now it isn't recognised by the Macs running on older operating systems. Not a major issue for me, but could be a headache for others. Just a shame when they say something is Mac compatible they never manage to make it as user friendly and logical as a Mac. Lots of people have said that this is quiet; all I can say is their living spaces must be noisy enough to drown out the clatter from this thing. I've taken a instant dislike to it as it whines, hums & clicks all the time.

It's also slow in use, which is not so much the copy speed but the time it takes to wind itself up whenever it's needed; every time my PC tries to access it it's like a 90 year old trying to pull itself out of a wheel chair (apologies to any 90 year olds reading this!). It makes it really annoying to use continuously because of this, the slowish copy speed and the accompanying whine every time you attempt to do anything with it.

In short, as soon as I can be bothered to move it it's going into the next room where I can forget about it. I ordered two of these hard drives. One has stopped working and took out all the electricity in the house in the process. The power pack is supposed to supply 12 volts to the hard drive. The lead to the hard drive brushed against my hand and it felt to be far more than 12 volts! I would not be surprised if the transformer in the power pack was not working and I probaly felt a full 240 volts. At first I was very pleased with it. Having invested a very long time and effort transferring masses of data to it, the power supply has failed. In the search for a replacement power supply I find that many forums are also criticizing the fact that their power supplies have also failed and that it is impossible to replace them. As I have confidential data on the disc and cannot re-format it, returning the HDD for a replacement is not an option. I have ordered an external HDD case along with power supply (at an additional £22) in the hope that the disc is in good working order. It's a fair price for a 1Tb external hard drive but I also have two Iomega 1Tb external hard drives which I bought for a similar price and which are rather better with regard to four minor irritations.

Firstly, this unit is so slow to get going you start wonder if all the connections are good. Secondly, it doesn't have a LED to let you know that it's on and working. Thirdly, it's slow to stop. It always refuses to stop on the first attempt to "safely remove hardware" but does so the second time. Fourthly, it doesn't have an on/off switch so you have to physically pull the plug to turn it off.

Good points? Well, it lies flat and has rubber ends which means you can stack them up if you have more than one.

These are all minor points and maybe the hard drive will prove to be reliable and long-lived but if I were buying another external drive it would probably be one that was more user-friendly. Having said that, it does what it's supposed to do which is to back-up my data so I'll give it four stars and hope it lasts. BTW, 1Tb is actually 931Mb.
